Emerging Paradigms of Consciousness Research: News and Views on Consciousness and Mind Science Connected and Gathered from around the Internet

"The new formula in physics describes humans as paradoxical beings who have two complementary aspects: They can show properties of Newtonian objects and also infinite fields of consciousness. ~ Stanislav Grof "

Fun Stuff and Inspiration

The Collective Unconsciousness Project

Just stumbled on this site, it's a pretty cool idea. Go contribute your dreams to the Collective Unconscious, or browse through the growing database.

The Collective Unconsciousness Project (TCUP) is not designed to be a finished project, but an evolving framework that changes by interacting with it. It exists as both an online community and personal space. The interface finds connections between dreams while exploring what it means to be dream-like. The navigation is purposefully non-hierarchical, based on chance and the user’s choices.

OpenEEG: The Open Source EEG project

One of the many projects I've had on my radar. The technically minded among you may find this site worth a look.

Many people are interested in what is called neurofeedback or EEG biofeedback training, a generic mental training method which makes the trainee consciously aware of the general activity in the brain. This method shows great potential for improving many mental capabilities and exploring consciousness. Other people want to do experiments with brain-computer interfaces or just want to have a look at their brain at work.

The Stroop Effect

Run through each list naming each colour that you see, without actually reading the words. If English is your first language the second list will likely cause a little conflict in your brain, slowing you down or causing you to stumble.

Stroop Effect: The Stroop Effect is a psychological test that demonstrates how difficult it is for the brain to overcome certain ingrained, learned responses, such as reading.

This psychological test demonstrates how difficult it is for the brain to overcome certain learned processes such as reading, but hypnotic suggestion has been found to overcome this effect.

The following articles provide a good summary of the research:

Solar Eclipse 2010 Patagonia

Few events have inspired as much magic and mystery throughout the ages as these rare and beautiful alignments, creating profound feelings of connection to our little blue planet.

Eric Mead: The magic of the placebo

Sugar pills, injections of nothing -- studies show that, more often than you'd expect, placebos really work. At TEDMED, magician Eric Mead does a trick to prove that, even when you know something's not real, you can still react as powerfully as if it is. Flatland
A Romance of Many Dimensions

Written in 1884 by Edwin A Abbott, Flatland is a marvelous novel about a 2 dimensional world, written from the perspective of a resident of Flatland on a consciousness expanding journey of his own.

If you ever dream of bigger, vaster, more amazing realities than this one, and have not come across Flatland before, I highly recommend it!

An Exercise For Observing and Reducing Visual Hemispheric Dominance

Repeated use of binaural beat audio technology effects hemispheric dominance. Binaural beat technology increases activity across the corpus callosum in other words interhemispheric transfer of information between the left and right brain. This leads to a relative shift in hemispheric dominance (from left-brain dominance to whole-brain dominance) and hemispheric synchronization, harmony and unity in the brain. This exercise and test can help to reduce brain dominance and helps to induce an interesting meditative state of mind.
